A Response to “The Veldt”
From the book called “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, we can easily see how technology destroys everything. As technology developed, the children were depending on the robotic machines rather than their parents. Day by day the children were giving more importance to the room and as a result, they let the room replaced their parents.
The more the world is getting advanced, the more we are becoming dependent on machines. The impact of technology on our social, mental, physical and environmental health can be devastating if we don’t keep ourselves in check. I think that is what Ray Bradbury wanted to say in this book. He illustrates how technology makes human emotionless. At one point of the story, Peter shouted to his father saying, “I hate you!”. Hate comes where there is a lack of love. Does technology make us to love less? After reading the book, I started thinking how much time I am on my phone and how much time I give my parents or siblings. I realized I hardly make time for them. Depending too much on technology, destroys our mental ability and critical thinking skills. The most common scenario nowadays is people are looking at their personal devices all the time as if they don’t have any idea what’s going on around them. I think, everyone can relate a little part of the science fiction with their everyday life.
I liked the way how author ended the story leaving a tragic and emotional sentiment. It helps us to think about our future and what should we be aware of. The rhetorical situation of the story is very clear and concise. The purpose of the passage is to explain the disadvantages of technology and the worst effects of it. The audience can be everyone living in the modern world. The Genre here is definitely science fiction, tragic and can be considered as horror also.
